A keto diet or Low-carb diet is an eating
meal plan that focuses on foods that contain a lot of useful fat, adequate
amounts of protein, and very few carbohydrates. It has been
controversial for decades because Some people claim that these diets increase
cholesterol and cause heart disease because of their high-fat content. But
Natural, many scientific studies prove that the keto diet or low-carb diet is healthy
and beneficial for the body. So let's cut through the science, separate fact from
fiction, and look at the benefits of the keto diet.
- Benefit 1: Weight Loss
Okay, so this one isn't so astounding, but
it is one of the most common reasons people embark on the keto diet. So why is
weight loss usually so easy on the ketogenic diet instead of other regular
diets? For all of the following reasons:
• The keto diet is composed of approximately
75% fat, 20 % protein, and 5% or fewer carbohydrates. The high-fat content and
lack of sugar means diminished cravings, lack of blood sugar swings and binges,
and increased satiation. Increased satiation=eating less. Many people also have
food sensitivities to grains, even gluten-free ones, so eliminating them may
lead to an increased ability to absorb minerals like magnesium and potassium,
which in turn means your body is more nourished and you have fewer cravings
• Ketones. When your blood sugar is running
low, your body turns to its glycogen stores for energy. Typically glycogen
stores house about 2000 calories of "backup" energy for when you run
out of glucose. Like the intelligent machine it is, your body depletes the glycogen
stores and then turns to your own body fat for fuel.
IMPORTANT: The ketogenic diet is not a free-for-all eat however much cheese or super low-carb fat bomb treats you want to diet. If you are eating way more calories than you need, you will not lose weight. So focus on keeping your diet around fatty cuts of grass-fed meat, butter, eggs, avocados, lots of green veggies and cruciferous, and be modest with the keto desserts, dairy, and sweets.
- Benefit 2: Reduced Blood Sugar and Insulin Levels
Millions of people around the world are
affected by diabetes and insulin resistance and particularly Keto diet is
helpful for those affected people. Researchers found that cutting carbs lowers
both blood sugar and insulin levels drastically. Some People who have diabetes
start keto diet may need to reduce their insulin dosage by 50% almost
immediately. If someone taking blood sugar medication should to their doctor
before taking a keto diet to prevent hypoglycemia.
- Benefit 3: Brain Function
A poorly functioning brain, as you may
have already experienced, leads to lessened work productivity, which in turn
means an unhappy boss, lack of job satisfaction, sugar cravings for energy, and
depression. It's a horrible domino effect. The original ketogenic diet was
formulated by Dr. Russell Wilder in the early 20th century to treat epilepsy.
The success rate was phenomenal and it is still used today to treat epilepsy
and other brain disorders. Research also indicates that ketones are more
efficient brain fuel than glucose. (Source)
- Benefit 4: Effective against Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is a condition highly
associated with your risk of diabetes and heart disease. In fact, metabolic syndrome is a collection of symptoms, which include:
·
Abdominal
obesity
·
Elevated
blood pressure
·
Elevated
fasting blood sugar levels
·
High
triglycerides
·
Low “good”
HDL cholesterol levels
However, a low-carb diet is incredibly
effective in treating all five of these symptoms.Under
such a diet, these conditions are nearly eliminated.
- Benefit 5: Potential Cancer Benefits
One study showed implementing the ketogenic diet led to a dramatically increased survival time and slower tumor growth. (Source) Researchers have examined the effects of the ketogenic diet in helping prevent or even treat certain cancers. One study found that the ketogenic diet may be a safe and suitable complementary treatment to use alongside chemotherapy and radiation therapy in people with certain cancers. This is because it would cause more oxidative stress in cancer cells than in normal cells, causing them to die. A more recent study from 2018 suggests that because the ketogenic diet reduces blood sugar, it could also lower the risk of insulin complications. Insulin is a hormone that controls blood sugar that may have links to some cancers. Although some research indicates that the ketogenic diet may have some benefit in cancer treatment, studies in this area are limited. Researchers need to carry out more studies to fully understand the potential benefits of the ketogenic diet in cancer prevention and treatment.

- Benefit 6: Increased Levels of ‘Good’ HDL Cholesterol
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is often
called “good” cholesterol. The higher your levels of HDL relative to “bad”
LDL, the lower your risk of heart disease. One of the best ways to increase
“good” HDL levels is to eat fat and low-carb diets include a lot
of fat. Therefore, it is unsurprising that HDL levels increase dramatically on
healthy, low-carb diets, while they tend to increase only moderately or even
decline on low-fat diets.
Conclusion:
Few things are as well established in nutrition science as the immense health benefits of low-carb and ketogenic diets. Not only can these diets improve your cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but they also reduce your appetite, boost weight loss, and lower your triglycerides. If you’re curious to boost your health, one of these diets could be worth considering.
